Tier 1 Girls u14s England Hockey National Cup - Round 1

Repton A 6- 1 North Staffs Vixens

Our first get together this season ultimately resulted in a glorious defeat, but the story behind it makes great reading.

We arrived knowing we were playing an exceptional club side, but we know we can give anyone a game on our day, and we did just that.

We set out in a defensive formation of 1-4-4-1 to nullify their flair players and it worked a treat. We started so solid with Raphs and Louiza pressing their attackers with Fran begins as insurance. 15 mins in 0-0, we were frustrating them ? and then an upset. A break away opportunity led by the impressive ruby and Macey created havoc and the ball fell to Izzy D (aged 11)who passed the all beyond the keeper 0-1!!

We kept working incredibly hard and some fantastic full back play by Maddy (aged 10 !) and Claudia stifled then further. Fran sweeping was incredible and bodies on the line everywhere, then on 25mins we misjudged he ball on left side and they stole in to square it for an equaliser 1-1.

We had to dig in again with lots of short corners. Raphs blocked at least 4 with her body, incredible appetite from them all. HT 1-1. Sensational!

Second half we had to keep fighting, it got harder with no subs and eventually they scored on 55 to go 2-1 up. Bella made some immense saves, one handed stops galore, amazing.

We then fell 3-1 behind when down to 10 players after the hard working Edi was binned harshly for knocking ball away ..

And then as she returned we lost Fran to a yellow card and our centre back whole was exposed - they scored 3 in last 7 minutes to make score line flattering. 3-1 would have been a better reflection on the game but we fought till the end. Freya looked strong moving forward .. and had we had Millie and Ava with us we could have done more going forward I feel to disturb them more often .. but their was an excellent team performance against a top club team, effort and desire to compete outstanding. We are very positive about rhe next round in the knockout plate and our first league outing against Repton B on 17/11 where we aim to gain revenge from today.
